I purchased acronis for $40 recently planning to use it to image my quad... the cd says it's bootable even on the cd itself. the windows acronis install also contains a utility BartPE to create a bootable cd you can use to boot and image with.

well, here's the first problem. It won't F**** boot. the product cd or the BartPE created cd. even with all my boot priority devices set to sata cdrom in bios, the darn thing still boots to vista C:, which just boggles the s out me. the hard disk is not even listed as a boot device in bios at this point.

has any of you used this software, I'm starting to think it's crap and just won't boot. because the vista media boots fine in my comp, like if I were to do a fresh install. it makes no sense unless acronis is full of it or not compatible with sata cdrom boots.

Try to boot from another bootable CD again.

well, I finally narrowed it down to a mobo issue.. non of my bootables were booting... reset bios, set all my boot devices, etc... no joy...

so I finally ended up moving the cd from sata port 3 to 4. bios redected it and it started working. somehow the bios was stuck at boot to hd always, even though it was set to cd on all 3 boot devices. this has to be a bios bug. I'm on 14, I wish they would get 16 into official staus and I'll update.. but I'm a little leary going to a beta which is what 16 is.

anyway, problem solved for now.. doesn't give me too much faith in my mobo though.

yeah, that is flaky to say the least... I've put it through the paces since earlier and it seems to be holding good now. but I was about to blow a gasket earlier, I musta rebooted and thrown the jumper reset switch and played with different bios settings about a dozen times before I finally pulled the case cover and switched sata ports... then kablammo it worked the first try.

re-flash the bios, it might be corrupted is what it sounds like to me.

My older version of Acronis True Image has an issue with certain drives on certain Intel chipsets. I don't know about the current version (I think mines v9 and current is v10)... Trying to remember now which drives... oh, yea, Acronis would boot off of IDE CDROM but could not see the IDE HDD on the same controller! (is this the jmicron controller?). It sees the SATA drives now on it. This all changed around when I moved the Asus P5B-E to the desktop and put SATA drives on it. I don't have a SATA CD/DVD drive so never tested that. I was not able to find anybody reporting the Intel Chipset problem on the newer version though.

Other than this I've rather liked the Acronis product for both schedule backups and for cloning off old 8GB HDDs as I replaced them with 10 or 20GB drives on the old cruncher machines.

acronis 11 worked like a champ. it was my mobo bios causing the issue. the boot priority somehow got hung at all 3 devices on hd no matter what it indicated. when I switched around sata ports and moved the cd from 3 to 4, it redetected and started working again. but it definitely was not acronis 11 with my issue, because even the vista and xp fresh install cd's would not boot until I swapped the sata ports on the cdrom.
