Well... in 2011 Intel will release the next gen Sandy bridge architecture...

and with it, new chipset and new sockets...

it should be noted that AMD probably won't be using am3 for bulldozer either...

AMD really has a leg-up in the legacy compatibility department.

However, wouldn't we all end up buying a new mobo anyway? Having a future-proof upgrade path sounds great in theory, but never seems to work out in practice IMO.

I probably won't upgrade to Sandy Bridge until a native 8 core cpu comes out though. I'll probably upgrade my i7 to a six core before then.

Although, I said the same thing about Nehalem. I thought I would stick to a Core2Quad till six core i7 came out. That didn't happen.

I almost went that path, going from core2quad to i7 six core, but then I realized that the price just wasn't worth it. hopefully the new architect will be worth the upgrade, like i7, otherwise I'll probably hold off too.

cheaper six core i7 is coming. That's what I'm planning to get
