Default SOLVED: COD 4 demo directx problem

Hello everyone...I recently downloaded the call of duty 4 demo. Installed fine, played great. After awhile I thought I would start tweaking with the settings..resolution and other in game graphics adjustments.

First time I changed the resolution it went fine. Next time I did it it would flash screen like normal to desktop then normally go back to game. Now it flashes screen to desktop then waits ten seconds and then says direct x has encountered a unrecoverable error.

I have updated directx many times now. Reinstalled video card drivers. Even reinstalled xp again. Any help would be great. Thanks

I had that happen with a game when I went to a resolution the game allowed but my monitor didn't.
I had to uninstall the game and then go thru my c drive and remove all folders that where left. rebooted and re-downloaded the game and it was fine.

I put the resolution up to 1900 x 1200 that is the max my monitor will handle. I dont get it as all other games have no prob.

1900x1200?? I don't know much about monitors, what kind is it. I have not gone above 1680x1050 on a 22" 16:10
It could be worth trying what I did if no other solution comes up

It is a Acer 24'' 16:10 Aspect Ratio Max Resolution is 1920 x1200 just realized that 1920 was max and not 1900

Still weird though. You are 20 pixels short, shouldn't it just resize it like in most games?

Looking at other forums, I have found out that xfire causes the crash. Exited it then tried again and worked great.

Xfire has went downhill ever since MTV bought it. Xfire went from being an awesome app to a bloatware filled buggy piece. Xfire exception errors is something that is very common in our days.
