    Default TV as computer display

I know people here is using a setup like this, and I'm just wondering how good it has been working, because I'm getting a TV for this soon.

During this week I played around with the dorm's, or whatever, 32" LCD TV, but I couldn't get it to work as a second monitor, but I didn't try to boot just with the TV connected. S-Video to Video (Yellow thingy :tongue_smilie was used.

I got bored of my 19" LG widescreen display a week after I bought it, that's about 1½ years ago. Just too friggin small! I thought about upgrading it *cough* a little bit, to a 42" LG 42LH7000. *cough*

Why a TV? Cheap for being so big, a normal 42" display would be 3 times more expensive! And I need a new TV anyways, gotta get that old beaten CRT thrown away... my Xbox 360 doesn't like it either.

Why 42"? Because my friend talked me over, he thought that 47" was too darn big for being primarly used as a computer monitor.

HD Ready 1080p, 24p Real Cinema, 100Hz, Bluetooth (), DivX, VGA, 4x HDMI, USB, CI-slot, MPEG-4 AVC decoder. A few sweetspots in my eyes.

I've played with mine some.. one thing I've found is the Svideo looks like crap fro windows desktop stuff, it looks OK on videos, but the fonts are all blurry... but my tv also has a vgz in, so that's what I use and it's a lot clearer...

haven't messed with the hdmi in... mainly because I'd need a dvi to hdmi converter for the video card, and I dont have one.

also on my laptop when I'm feeding the TV a vga signal, the laptop's primary display is still the lcd on the lappy. so when I want to run something on the tv, it's like a second monitor where I have to drag the item off the side off the lcd and onto the tv side of the sidplay, or the program tries to run on the lappy lcd.. that confused the heck out of me at first when I was trying to watch a vlc movie. it kept wanting to play only on the lappy lcd. so the fix was to lauch vlc first, then drag it over to the tv side, and open the avi file from there, then it displayed on the tv... bu since the tv and lcd are different res's, if I tried to start the avi and then drag it over to the tv, it screwed the video up because it was in the lcd's res, and webt black screen on the tv.

there's some quircks with vga that didn't show up with svideo, like above. but once I figured them out, vga gave me monitor like quality on the TV.

Yep HDTV as a monitor works well. You shouldn't have any problems running HDMI from your GTX DVI port.

The res is a bit lower than PC displays at that size (most would be like 2560x1600 at least), but 1900x1080 or 1900x1200 isn't bad. Make sure you have a bit of space between your eyes and the montor though, or else you'll have to turn your head to see everything.

1920x1080 is good enough for me, 1440x900 is almost too much for desktop space.

Yeah we laughed about that with a few friends already. Sitting a few inches away so that you need to turn your head from side to side to read subtitles in movies etc.

The moving will just be a little problem.. I think that it's getting a little tight with room, even in my brother's Audi A6 Avant.. And my room needs some work done for that TV too.

Just needs some more money. :tongue_smilie:

I use a 42" 1080p Olevia LCD TV for my monitor, through HDMI.

It looks AWESOME! It is 1000x better than my old LCD. I sit about 10 feet away, use a wireless keyboard and mouse, and enjoy being in the center of 450w of surround sound.

You my friend have it made. I contemplated doing this. TVs are so expensive and then I looked at the 200.00 I was going to use for a moniitor but all this TV talk has me really thinking about where to invest.
Maybe this is the right way to go, only it will be a lot longer before a grand or two build up in my savings account.

Thats a very tempting offer. Trying not to hit that pay button.
I will look into this a little deeper from home. I had my mind set on the Asus 21.5 to 23.6 or the Samsung in the same range.
I went from wanting to spend under 200.00 to thinking a few extra dollars for a few extra inches couldnt hurt.
I think Im infected with the Chick Logic Syndrome.
Its On sale and Im saving money=0)
