OK, the 60gb ocz vertex came in today... updated the firmware and aligned the partition for a win7x64 install...

and this one does a lot better on the P35 board, than the 30gb does on the old GM965 notebook board...

it definitely makes the user experience better in windows... I decided to just forgo adskip and use win7 media center, I'll just ff through the ads I guess.. also, I finally figured out how to make win7 media center go to the D drive (my 500gb 7200.11).. it was 2 settings in media center.
    1. switch the libarary.
    2. change the recorder to D drive, if you dont change the recorder to D, then it defaults to C public even if your library says D:\recorded tv.. that drove me nuts for a bit.. my library said D:\recorded tv, but the dam recordings kept defaulting to C:\public... finally after searching around the settings inside mce, I found a recorder default hard drive of C or D.. weird crap, but it finally worked..

anyway, here's the vertex hdtune on the abit P35 board..
you might might to hop on one of these Jebo... good price and performance for a ssd..

I have a 120GB Vertex on its way It was $360

It's going to replace the 160GB Caviar Black in my laptop (seen in the attachment), despite the limitation of ICH8M

cool, the 120 is supposed to be a little faster than the 30 and 60.. but not sure if you'll see it on the mobile..

when you get it Jebo. you'll want to do 2 things..

    1. flash the firmware to the latest 1.10 (1370) firmware... (both of mine shipped with 1275)
pretty easy if you just do it as soon as it arrives.. but if you get anxious and install it in the notebook first it's a pita, you'll just have to remove it later like I did...
(I just unplugged my second hd in my desktop and plugged the ssd in hanging by the cables, booted to windows and flashed it-you need windows to flash, so it wont flash in the notebook)
here's the file: http://www.ocztechnology.com/drivers/Vertex_1.10.zip (just dl it to your C: drive on your desktop, so it'll be handy when you flash the vertex)
    instructions: http://www.ocztechnology.com/drivers...hing_Guide.pdf

    2. after you flash it you can install it in the notebook and create and align a partition for the os with diskpart, using the os boot cd. (I'm using align=32 on both of mine)
    instructions: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...56&postcount=3
he doesn't list the option here, but if you dont want to use the whole disk as the C partition, then add size=n to the diskpart command.
    example:
create partition primary align=32 size=40960 (this will create an aligned 40gb partition)

and all sorts of info in the support forums: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=54859
but the 2 steps above will cut through all the forum mud. it took me quite a bit of reading before I fouond out what was exactly necessary.. those 2 steps are the easiest.. if you read all the junk in the support forums, it's so full of user opinion it's hard to fishing out what's really needed and what's just user fud.

also, if you wanna turn that scorpio into a usb storage, I bought one of these and have been using with that 160gb seagate for data and acronis imaging.. I had my doubt acronis boot cd would be able to see it, but it does.. and it gets decent speed for a usb drive, about 20-30mbs for windows data as shown in the copy window in windows..

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182138

pretty good deal for $15 free ship.. and it's aluminum, not plastic.

btw: here's an updated hdtune on the GM965 with firmware 1.10 (1370), I think it adds trim support.. no speed increase really, just better firmware ssd mgm to make it last longer.

this is a win7x64 7100 install with al my base apps for a notebook.. (plus bout 2.5gb of storage files that I want on the ssd instead of the usb for fast access)

    Thanks for the info.

I had actually bookmarked a couple links you posted earlier, I think they are the same.

Unfortunately, to mitigate the cost of the Vertex, the Scorpio (I gotta stop calling it Caviar) is already sold to a guy on hardforum for $45 IIRC.

I agree that an external 2.5" enclosure is a great tool to have....when I bought the Scorpio I actually dropped the 320GB 5400rpm stock drive into a Vantec aluminum USB enclosure that looks very similar. Big storage accessible with no AC adaptor needed is very handy when your OS drive is on the smaller side. I took like 200GB of movies and recorded HDTV shows with me when I went on vacation last January.

However, the 320GB 5400rpm drive is currently serving as an OS drive on one of my desktops...that happened when I sold my Velociraptor (also to mitigate the cost of the Vertex upgrade). I have a handful of old IDE drives sitting around. I'll move one of them into that desktop eventually, and move the 2.5" drive back to portable storage.

Got my Vertex installed and running Windows 7. Wow, what a difference. Check out this comparison to my Scorpio Black (which is either the #1 or #2 fastest notebook HDD before SSD came along).

it really makes the notebook feel like a desktop on a raptor or faster huh?

best notebook upgrade I've ever done.

looks like you're getting the same results on your mobile chipset as I did mine. it's little slower than on the better desktop chipset, but still blows every notebook drive to kingdom come. and it's not one of those upgrades that just look better on benchmarks, you can literally feel the huge performance gain in every aspect of windows from the user point of view.
