Thread: New system questions

  1. #1

    Default New system questions

I recently put together a new rig

    SYSTEM INFO.
    MEMORY OCZ Reaper 3072MB PC14928 DDR3 1866MHz (3x1024)ULTRA THERMAX T3 ALUMINUM MEMORY COOLER
    CPU ntel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz 8M LGA1366 CPU
    COOLING Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler I7
    MOBO Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Intel X58 LGA1366
    GPU EVGA GTX-280 OC VERSION
HD Seagate 1TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3g
    XP HOME
    1000 W MOD PS

Q.1 When I restart the bios screen appears then goes to a screen asking to comfirm the version of windows, then blank and windows will not load until I restart go back to the bios screen load optimum settings f10 and restart?

Q.2 I am looking for step by step info on how to oc my rig to 3.8 to 4.0 as I run x-plane and FSX in a home built cockpit sim with 15 usb devices and 3 22" hd monitors. I think I built in enough cooling , mem, mobo etc. to acheive the 3.8 to 4.0, however what do you guys think?

    regards

    hellou ORSAG, welcome to OCWiki!

well it seems that you got a nice system, still as Master John said, can you load windows?
    it was a clean install?

There is a lot of guys who has that MoBo they will help in no time!
    but first things first ---

when you said "opt settings" that is BIOS, so it means that you are already OCing,
    what are your BIOS settings?

    Hi John,

Yes I can but I have to go through the bios screen, let me try to clarify, currently I have to shut my system down on "standby" then it will come back up. If I do a complete shut down or restart It cycles to the gigabyte splash screen then tries to load windows then the screens stay black! I an using easy tune 6 @ 3.2 GHz , however I have read a lot of negative stuff about it.

    thanks for your reply!

Then I have to reset via bios at "load optimum settings" to get windows to load. I an using easy tune 6 @ 3.2 GHz , however I have read a lot of negative stuff about it, what is your opinion?

EasyTune6 is gonna be your problem I think. You should try to manually setup your bios and see if that fixes your issue. Someone with the same MOBO will def be able to go over all setting for optimal performance. If you search for thread containing your mobo model, you should be able to find everything you need. Good luck and your system sounds like a lot of fun, take some pics and post them I want to see this homemade cockpit simulator. You should market it and sell since its such a cool idea. I live on the treasure cost of FL and they have piper aircraft, Simcom training center and Flight safety here so you would have a good place to start you marketing for it if you are interested. With some pics and maybe video with specs I could make a brochure and give it to some people at those places to see what kinda response you get.

Ditto what Junglewarfare420 said, software overclocking programs are notorious for causing instability and errors. Using the BIOS is best.

for 4 ghz go into advanced bios

limit cpuid max to 3> disable
    no exicute mem> disabled
init display> peg or pci x16-1 (depending on what bios version you are using)
then go back and into MIT
then click on advanced cpu features
    then set
    intel turbo boost > enabled
    cpu/cores > all
    cpu multi threading > enabled
    cpu enhanced halt > disabled
    c3/c6/c7 state > disabled
    cpu thermal monitor > enabled
    cpu eist function > disabled
    virtulization tech > disabled
    bi-dirrectional prochot > disabled
then esc to go back to mit main page
then go into uncore & qpi features
    and set qpi link x36
    uncore frequency x16
    base clock control > enabled
    cpu multi > 20
    the base clock >191
    qpi link x36 (already set)
    uncore x16 (already set)
mem x8 (this will give you 1528mhz, i know that your ram is 1866 but once you get it stable you can try changing mem multi to x10 , that would then give you 1910 mhz and your mem should be able to do that no problem but better to try get cpu stable first before tuning memory, you may also then need to change uncore multi to x20 as it must always be 2 x mem multi
also im not sure on your memory but i think the timings are 9,9,9,28 ? set them manually

    so 191x21= 4011mhz
    mem 191x8=1528mhz

    then voltages
    cpu vcore 1.3v
    qpi/vtt 1.295v
    mem voltage 1.66v

if its a good DO you should be able to drop vcore and qpi/vtt voltages but leave vram voltage @ 1.66v
all cpu's are different, it really depends if you have a CO/C1 or DO stepping and what batch number you have as to how much vcore and vtt voltage you will need

    for eg, i got a i7 920 DO batch "3849B018" , for 4.2ghz i need 1.262vcore and 1.22v for qpi/vtt to be stable, (for 4.4ghz 1.36v vcore, 1.3v qpi/vtt)

    with my old CO/C1 i7 920 for 4ghz i needed 1.375v for vcore and 1,315v for qpi/vtt,
so you really need to play with it to get it stable, let us know if its a DO stepping and the batch number

also make sure you have latest versions of cpuz, linx, real temp and prime

    CPU-Z 1.52.1 (32bit)
    CPU-Z 1.52.1 (64bit)
    LinX 0.6.2
    RealTemp 3.30 RC11
    Prime95v.25.11 build 2 (32bit)
    Prime95v.25.11 build 2 (64bit)

i use linx to get it stable say 10 to 20 passes then i hit it with prime, keep temps under 80c max when under 100% load

    good luck !

edit....a good DO should be able to do 4ghz @ around 1.2v vcore, but i wouldnt go any lower than 1.22v for qpi/vtt as it should never be more than a .5v difference between qpi/vtt and vram/memory voltages so you dont damage cpu
