Thread: Computer randomly resets - yea, it's memorysan again

Default Computer randomly resets - yea, it's memorysan again

Hi all, it's me again with another problem with the same build:

O.K., I recently got past one big problem that was a simple fix but took a while to get to it

but I had another problem at the same time. I was hoping that fixing one problem would fix the other but it didn't.

    My computer randomly resets.

There is no pattern, rhyme, or reason to it. It might happen when I first turn the computer on or it may be good for 30 minutes...it's completely random. I'm doing something completely different (or don't get the chance to do anything at all) each time it happens.

O.K., so I have been trying to fix this problem myself with no luck...I have tried looking on line to see if I could find the fix somewhere and the fixes I have seen don't seem to match my problem. Here are a few things I have tried:

    1. Tying back every connector that isn't connected to anything to ensure they weren't touching anything and the power jump was causing a reset.
    2. Disconnecting and reconnecting everything to make sure there isn't a bad connection somewhere.
    3. It is not overheating. I know this because I have CoreTemp running (when I can get the computer to actually boot) and the core temps are in the 30's at idle and get into the 40's when I am doing stuff (load). I have never seen the temps climb into the 50's, but I haven't had it under a heavy load yet. (Mainly downloading and installing stuff to set up my computer the way I want it.) The resets also happen often when the computer is just turned on and hasn't had a chance to get hot.
    4. It is not a Virus. I have completely slicked the hard drive. Not as a fix for this, but because I thought there might have been a problem with Windows not liking my upgrade when I had the last problem.
    5. The power supply is neither old or weak. I have a brand new 1050W power supply (brand name is in my signature). I think that should be enough to power my system.
    6. I have tried clearing the CMOS several times.
    7. I have tried setting the BIOS ROM jumpers on the motherboard to "BIOS select, default is BIOS ROM 1" and the same with BIOS ROM 2. No change on either one.
    8. I have NOT tried updating the BIOS because I'm afraid the power may reset while I'm trying to do it and destroy my BIOS.

If you want to know what is in my build, either look in my signature or in the link posted above. I don't want to drag out this post by retyping it here. Just know that everything in my build is bran new with the exception of the DVDROM and the Hard Drive.

Is there anything you can suggest that I haven't tried yet?

Sorry it took me so long to reply...had other things to do today.

Anyway, I tried pulling each memory stick, one at a time and nothing changed. I tried each memory stick, one at a time in each slot on the mother board...no change. I think that rules out memory or the memory slots on the mother board unless all three of either are bad at the same time.

I also tried swapping out the power supply with the old one I had in the old rig. I removed one of the video cards to make sure it could handle powering it. The old one is only a 700W. After the swap...the computer still reset several times on me. I think this rules out the power supply now.

I remember someone saying in the last problem I had that Foxconn mother boards are a little sketchy when it comes to memory and that I should underclock the memory. Do you think that may help with this problem? If so, how do I do that?

make sure they have the right voltage... if they are not overclocked make sure the uncore is double the ram speed... if that is clear take off your overclock and make sure its not that...

to under clock ram all you do is reduce their setting to that of lower speed ram... it really depends on the motherboard... you should have 1066 1333 and 1600 to choose from... if you have 1600 pick 1333 setting...
we really need touge in here... he had a bloodrage... before it died...

I have never done any overclocking or underclocking before. Where do I check the voltage and how do I change the speed of the ram? Is that in the BIOS settings?

voltage and ram speed are in the bios... I am guessing your undervolting them if you have never been in the bios before...

O.K., I looked up a little more information on line (the motherboard owner's manual wasn't much help with the answers I needed).

I found out that it was underclocked by default, so with that in mind I set it to what it should be for my memory. I found out what it should be here:

    http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=75827

So the change is in the picture below:

Now I know the memory is set up right, but it didn't get rid of the random resets.

O.K., so I've done a little more reading. Should I try increasing the memory voltage to see if that makes it more stable? Maybe set it at the highest 1.65V and see what happens?

O.K., I tried setting everything to the settings shown in the link I posted above (I hadn't set the voltages or timing before) and it didn't change anything. I also tried setting the memory voltage to 1.65V and the timing to 8-8-8-24 with everything else set to default (even the speed of the memory with memory and uncore multipliers both at auto, default memory speed = 1067MHz) and it didn't help.

Any other ideas?...or should I just wait for Touge to come over and help me?

I was kinda hoping to have this fixed so he could help me with overclocking when he gets back.
