Thread: What about this SSD

  1. #1

    Question What about this SSD

I've nearly finished my new build, and couldn't decide on a HDD or SSD. After reading a few review and clips, HDD was out of the question anymore. lol SDD all the way
    SSD's are amazing !

But im thinking of getting an HDD only for my files, ETC movies, pics and music and run my OS, programs/games on a SSD. Is this a good way to do things ? I mean i don't see anything wronge with this.

Right now my (500GB) HDD has used up 54GB of storage. I also have a 1TB drives which i keep my personal files in.

So that's why I think a 64GB SSD should be enough for me since I've only used 54 on my 500GB where all my programs/OS are on and there are a lot of programs I dont use anyway !

    I fount this SSD drive = Kingston SSD 2.5” 64GB for $149 I think that's a reasonable price ?
The site that's sells them only list's them as Kingston SSD 2.5” 64GB no other information. I'm just wondering could this be an older model which has slower speed or something along those lines ?

I really need a little help on this since I don't know much about SSD's

    Thanks to those who replie

    Here is a fast one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227468 .

but it is only a 30GB , the ocz drives are some of the fastest besides intel. If you want speed, SLC chips, MLC are slower but go to bigger sizes
    EVGA X58 CLASSIFIED SLI
    INTEL CORE I7 920 D0 @ 4.0GHZ
    PATRIOT VIPER 2 DDR3 2000
    3 GTX 275 TRI-SLI
    VELOCIRAPTOR 300

30gb is enough for a win7 os drive. not vista though. who wants vista anymore anyway.
I have the 30gb vertex in my lappy.

and the 60gb vertex as my win7 os drive in my desktop, with a 500gb 7200rpm storage/data drive... win7 only needs about 22gb even with all my apps..

I got the Kingston SSD 2.5” 64GB , Before I bought the drive I made one of the biggest mistakes on SSD's ! by not checking the read and write speeds(stupid me)
Any way It's read is 100MB/s and write 70MB/s. It's not bad but I wanted something faster but didn't want to get rid of the new drive so i'm gonna get another and run them in raid 0.
Which should double the read and writes !

    but....

I need help since I've never set up raid before and have very little info on how to do it.(want to do raid 0)
    Here is what I have,
    MOBO= X58-UD3R
    SSD=Kingston SSD 2.5 64GB

Do I need anything else to do raid, my mobo has a internal raid controller so I don't need to get one right ?

I'm going though my mobo manual to get a grasp but its kind of confusing. I'm sure It will seem easily once I learn how to do it

    it's easier than it seems.

one thing you'll need to do is reinstall windows, so you'll need to backup your data first.

then, enable RAID in your bios, and if your UD3 is like my UD5, after your BIOS posts, you'll see the Intel RAID manager load, and it will ask you to press CTRL + I to enter the RAID setup bios. There, you just tell it you want to run the HDDs in raid 0 and it'll be done. Then reinstall windows and you're good to go just like any other hard drive.

    cool, thanks jebo

I still haven't started up my new rig (coolant hasn't arrived yet ) meaning I don't have to reinstall.

Man you sure that's all I need to know ! you make it sound sooo easy
Aren't there other settings I'll have to choose when im in raid man ?

    Cheers

oh only one thing. when you make the RAID the intel bios will ask you what stripe size you want to use. Chose the biggest size.

    Thats really it
