Frames per second, or fps, is the speed at which an image is updated on a display. This may refer to at least two different things.

First is the speed at which the rendering systems of the display draw a new image on the screen. This misapplication of the term FPS should more correctly be called the [[refresh rate]]. Generally a higher refresh rate was considered more desirable due to causing less eye strain when using [[crt]] based monitors. With the increased popularity of [[lcd]] displays the refresh rate now has less to eye strain and more importance is now given to the rate at which moving images are updated. This is particularly important when watching fast moving scenes such as action movies or gaming.

Second, and perhaps more relevant is the use of fps to discuss the speed at which a computers [[gpu]] is capable of rendering a given 3d scene. Due a very wide variance between the rendering power of a gpus and also the complexity of 3d programs there is a very wide range of fps's. Again, a higher refresh rate is considered desirable if it can be obtained without losing visual quality.
